Dii Consentes

The Dii Consentes are a group of twelve major gods and goddesses that the Romans worshipped most frequently. These are the gods that we hear about most often when we hear of Roman mythology: Jupiter, Juno, Mercury... or more known with their Greek names: Zeus, Hera, and Hermes. Below is a list of the Dii Consentes and descriptions of them.

Jupiter

Jupiter was the king of the gods. All other

gods were below him. He was god of

thunder and the sky. He is the

equivalent of Zeus in Greek Mythology. His wife is Juno.

Juno

Juno is the protector and special

counselor of the state. She is the

daughter of Saturn and the sister/wife

of Jupiter, King of the Gods. Her Greek equivalent

is Hera. She was called Regina ("queen") in Rome.

Minerva

She is the goddess of poetry,

medicine, wisdom, commerce,

weaving, crafts, magic, and the

inventor of music. She is often

depicted with her sacred creature,

an owl, which symbolizes her ties to wisdom.

She is often equated with the goddess Athena

from the major Greek gods.

Neptune

Neptune is the god of water and the sea.

in Roman mythology and religion. He is

analogous with, but not identical to, the

Greek god Poseidon. In the Greek-influenced

tradition, Neptune is the brother of Jupiter

and Pluto (who is god of the underworld).

Vesta

She is the goddess of hearth, home and family. Her

presence was symbolized by sacrifical fire. Her Greek

equivalent is Hestia.

Mercury

He was a messenger and a god of trade.

His Greek equivalent is Hermes.

Ceres

She is the goddess of anything that

is agricultural,fertility and motherly

relationships. Her daughter, Prosperina

is the wife of Pluto (or Hades). Her Greek

equivalent is Demeter.

Vulcan

Vulcan is the god of beneficial

and hindering fire. This also includes the volcanoes

that were spotted throughout the Roman Empire. Volcanoes

get there name from this god. He is usually pictured with

a thunderbolt. His Greek equivalent is Hephaestus.

Diana

Diana is the goddess associated with

hunting, woodlands, and animals. She is also associated

with the moon in only Roman mythology, not at all in Greek

mythology. She was the emblem of chastity. She looked over

virgins and women. She is the one goddess to originate

from Rome, and not Greece.

Mars

He is the god of war. He was also

known as an agricutural guardian.

He was directly under Jupiter and

second in importance. He was the

most prominentof all the Roman military

gods. He is identified with the

Greek god Ares.

Venus

Venus is the goddess of beauty,

love and fertility.She played a key role in

many myths of the Roman pagnistic religion. Her

Greek equivalent is Aphrodite.

Apollo

Apollo the god of light and the sun,

truth and prophecy, medicine, healing,

plague, music, poetry, arts and more.

Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto.

Bacchus

Some scholars inclued Bacchus in the Dii Consentes and leave out a different god. Bacchus was the god of wine and intoxication. If you have heard about Roman parties then you will understand why he was one of the most loved gods. His Greek equivalent is Dionysus, who was not as popular in Greek society.
